From Noise to Signal: Rebuilding a Fashion School’s Google Ads Account From the Ground Up

Case and Challenge:

Karen’s School of Fashion is a project-based fashion design and sewing school with studios in Morganville, New Jersey and Manhattan. Founded by an FIT graduate and former DKNY designer, the school teaches small, age-grouped classes for kids and teens/adults, and most of its business comes from families who enroll season after season.

The school had been running Google Ads, but nobody could say with confidence whether the ads were working. The account had originally been shared with an unrelated local business, and years of auto-generated settings had piled up on top of that. The dashboard showed plenty of activity, but the numbers didn’t line up with actual enrollments, and the campaigns were optimizing toward signals that had nothing to do with selling a class.

Client: Karen’s School of Fashion

Project Type: Google Ads Audit, Conversion Tracking & Campaign Rebuild

What They Needed Us For

When we opened the account, it had 16 separate actions all counted as “primary” conversions. That meant Google was treating a tap on “Get Directions,” an app download, and even customer activity from the other business exactly the same as a paid class enrollment. Smart Bidding will always chase the cheapest signal it’s given, so the budget was being spent chasing actions that didn’t matter.

The main campaign was a Performance Max campaign that looked busy on paper, with high impressions and clicks, but produced very few verified enrollments. When we dug in, roughly 98% of its traffic was coming from display and video placements rather than search. Many of the “conversions” it reported turned out to be accidental taps and abandoned phone dialers, not real parents reaching out.

The school needed three things: an honest picture of what the ads were actually producing, tracking that tied spending to real enrollments, and campaigns built to reach families actively searching for sewing and fashion classes in each studio’s area.

Our Approach
  1. Full Account Audit: We reviewed every conversion action, its source, its counting method, and which campaigns were using it. This surfaced duplicate tracking, Google-generated local actions, and campaign-level goals that were quietly overriding the account settings. It also revealed the full extent of the shared-account history, which we untangled carefully so nothing belonging to the other business was disrupted.
  2. Conversion Cleanup: Rather than deleting anything and losing history, we moved every low-value action to secondary status so it stopped influencing bidding but stayed available for reference. The account now optimizes toward the actions that actually matter to the school: a completed class purchase and a text inquiry from an interested parent.
  3. Rebuilt Purchase Tracking: We installed Google Tag Manager on the school’s WooCommerce site and set up native ecommerce tracking for checkout and purchase events. Every new tag was built alongside the existing setup and kept at secondary status until we verified it was firing correctly. Along the way we diagnosed and resolved a security plugin conflict that was silently blocking tags.
  4. Tracking That Fits How the School Sells: Many parents prefer to text the school before enrolling, which traditional ecommerce tracking misses entirely. We built click-to-text tracking into the funnel so those conversations are counted, and we designed reporting around the school’s real sales process instead of forcing it into a standard template.
  5. Search Campaigns Built on Intent: We replaced the display-heavy Performance Max campaign with two geo-targeted Search campaigns, one for New Jersey and one for Manhattan. Each has its own ad groups for kids and teen/adult programs, tailored ad copy, a shared negative keyword list to filter out irrelevant searches, and a dedicated landing page matched to what searchers were looking for.
  6. Smarter Bidding Strategy: An aggressive cost-per-acquisition target left over from the old setup was choking delivery once the inflated conversion data was removed. We launched the new campaigns on a click-based strategy so the account can build clean conversion history before handing control back to automated bidding. We also turned off auto-applied recommendations after one quietly changed campaign goals.
  7. Ongoing Expansion and Monitoring: With clean data coming in, we added keyword expansions in stages, monitoring search term reports as we went to keep traffic relevant.
Results and Accomplishments
  • Focused Optimization: We cut the account from 16 competing primary conversions down to the few that represent real enrollment intent, so Google now optimizes toward actual customers instead of cheap, meaningless actions.
  • Clean, Separated Data: The school’s reporting is no longer mixed with another business’s activity, giving the owner numbers she can trust for the first time.
  • Real Search Intent: Traffic shifted from about 98% display placements to search-only ads that appear when parents and students are actively looking for sewing and fashion classes nearby.
  • Strong Ad Engagement: In its first days, the New Jersey campaign earned a 12% click-through rate, well above the typical 2–5% range for search ads, showing that the ads and landing page speak directly to what searchers want.
  • Clear Market Insight: With accurate tracking in place, the school can now see true search demand in each market and make informed decisions about where to invest between its New Jersey and Manhattan studios.
Conclusion

A Google Ads account is only as smart as the data it’s fed. By separating Karen’s School of Fashion from another business’s history, rebuilding conversion tracking around how the school actually sells, and replacing display-heavy campaigns with intent-driven search, we turned an account full of misleading numbers into one that tells the truth. The school now has a foundation it can scale with confidence, knowing that every dollar is working toward real enrollments.

The Feedback:

“I knew we were spending money on Google Ads, but I honestly couldn’t tell you what we were getting for it. 2H Media dug into everything, found problems I never knew existed, and rebuilt our ads around how my school actually works, including the parents who like to text me before they enroll. Now I can see what’s really bringing families through our doors, and I finally trust the numbers.”
